Register for a JCI Official Course

By Lewis, 2012

Updates About JCI Training Activities

By Lewis, 2012年3月23日

Dear trainers in JCI,

First of all, thank you again for your hard work and dedication to the development and training of JCI members. I also want to thank all the trainers who are sending the suggestions about the re-certification of the Head and Assistant Trainer of JCI Trainer and JCI Designer.

Testing of an evaluation system:

Since November 13, 2011 we are sending out evaluation forms to every Head and Assistant Trainer of all JCI Official Courses conducted. Also, the participants receive an evaluation from where they will evaluate the trainers and will answer a knowledge test to see how much they learned during the course. The results are not as expected because very few participants actually send the forms back but one trend can be observed. Trainers in general grade other trainers much higher that the participants rate them. Many trainers are receiving very low grades and will be observed by the Commission if the trend persists. Also, it seems that not many participants are learning because a large percentage doesn’t pass the minimum level of knowledge after the course. It can be because the trainer did not teach well enough or because the participants did not pay attention. On any case, the Commission will have to act because the purpose of training is to teach new knowledge and create change by using that knowledge and if no learning happens, no action or positive impact will happen.

The results of the evaluations will be sent to each trainer after a month of the course, when we don’t expect more forms from participants.

New system for Assistant Trainers recommendations:

We also tested a new system to evaluate the performance of the Assistant Trainers at the JCI Official Courses. Many people who sent the feedback about the quality said they think that Head Trainers are not taking their responsibilities seriously enough and are just recommending everyone and this may be the reason why some Head Trainers are not up to the level required to conduct the JCI Official Courses effectively. The new system will be implemented in a few days and details about the use will be sent out to all Head Trainers. The new system will ask the Head Trainers to answer a few questions about the Assistant Trainer’s performance and the system will calculate the result automatically. This will avoid the pressure the Head Trainer may suffer when doing the recommendations. The Head Trainer’s evaluation will also be compared to the participants’ evaluations and other Head Trainers who worked with the same Assistant Trainers before or after. This will avoid having Head Trainers giving high grades to friends who are not qualified to become Head Trainers.

The new system will have four levels of recommendation, depending on the answers given by the Head Trainer on the evaluation form:

  • Mastered this module: When the Assistant Trainer masters all modules of the course, he/she can apply for Head Trainer of the course.
  • Passed this module: The Assistant Trainer still needs to conduct this module until he/she masters the content, but can also conduct more difficult modules (passing from first to second timer, for example).
  • Need more practice: To ensure participants understand the content of this module, the Assistant Trainer should practice more by conducting the same modules until the “Passed this module” is reached (in this case, the Assistant Trainer cannot pass from first to second timer, for example).
  • Graduate again from the course: To be able to conduct this course effectively, the Assistant Trainer should gain more experience and knowledge about the content by graduating from the course again.

New JCI Training Policy Manual:

As dictated by the JCI Executive Committee, the JCI Training Commission worked on a new and shorter version of the JCI Training Policy Manual with the purpose to make rules easier to understand and fair to everyone. It must be very clear to trainers in JCI that the purpose of training in JCI is not to train and develop professional trainers, but help the active members who have the skills to also teach skills and knowledge to other members with more advanced techniques and skills to train JCI members about JCI issues. Trainers who are in JCI only for their own training careers must seek other ways to get certified because JCI Training will certify active members who are also trainers and who help in the development of the members, Local and National Organizations. The proposal of the new JCI Training Policy Manual will be discussed at the 2012 Area Conferences and then proposed to the JCI Executive Committee at the Mid Year meeting in June.

Revision of some JCI Official Courses:

JCI is revising some of the JCI Official Courses and some will have the last tests at the Conferences and some will be ready by those events.

  • JCI Trainer is being tested since December of 2011 and we are now in the final stages to the new and revised course. It will focus more on developing stage skills of the participants and more time for practice will be available during the course.
  • JCI Designer also started to change last December and the final version will be ready for the 2012 JCI Conferences, although the course will not be offered at all events.
  • JCI Achieve and JCI Admin will be reduced to half day courses. The afternoon part of the courses will be offered in a separate course, most likely as a free course or JCI Recommended Course, if the rules for JCI Recommended Courses are approved in June by the JCI Executive Committee.
  • JCI Impact is also being designed and will be tested in some events and should be ready to be launched at the 2012 JCI Partnership Summit in New York, next July.

JCI Official Course page will have a new look:

In the next few days the JCI Official Course page will have a new look and new features. The purpose is to make the page easier to understand and work and also offer some statistics and more information about the courses. A cool feature will be a bulletin board for everyone involved in the course and a message system for the Head Trainer to communicate with the participants and other trainers.

We hope this information will help you to understand what we are doing and if you have any comments or suggestion, please do not hesitate to contact us. You can find the Commission’s e-mails on the JCI website or just send your inquiries or ideas to training@jci.cc.

Improving JCI Training to Increase Impact

By Lewis, 2012年3月3日

A message from JCI Training Commission Chairperson Esther ter Beek, ITF #152

In this second month of 2012, the year of the Dragon, the year of change and impact, your JCI Training Commission is working very hard to support trainers and facilitate training in all JCI organizations. All commissioners do this because they strongly believe in the purpose and value JCI Trainings add to achieving the JCI Mission.

Changing and improving the JCI Training system needs to be done carefully, thoroughly and with the big picture constantly in consideration.

We need all members and JCI Local and National Presidents to think with us and be part of the solution. The JCI Training Commission is looking forward to your suggestions and innovative, feasible ideas that can help us establish a new system, new guidelines and new policies for training in JCI.

Throughout the past three months, the JCI Training Commission has faced several challenges that illustrate the need for these changes:

It has been brought to our attention that many of the graduates of the JCI Official Courses do not pass the knowledge test that is administered two days after graduating from the course. This could be a participant or trainer-related issue. However, it must be taken into consideration during JCI Training improvements to ensure a successful transfer of knowledge during the course.

We have also been alerted that some JCI Trainers who are currently conducting JCI Official Courses receive below average evaluations from the participants of their courses. Each trainer should have the proper skills to conduct the training and pass on their knowledge to empower, not discourage the participants. This matter will also be considered by the JCI Training Commission to ensure each trainer is qualified to effectively conduct an official course.

We all share a big responsibility together. JCI’s Mission is to empower young active citizens to create positive change, and the new skills, knowledge and insight gained from JCI Trainings are essential to fulfilling this goal. Our JCI trainers must be able to effectively and successfully conduct JCI Official Courses and pass on their wisdom to the participants.

I kindly request your input and I invite you to help the JCI Training Commission improve the evaluation system, change the policy manual and create excellent trainers that are able to help our members to be better. Share your thoughts today.

Thank you for your input and energy in advance.

Warm regards on behalf of the 2012 JCI Training Commission,

Esther ter Beek

2012年訓練委員會的期望

By Lewis, 2012

Message from the 2012 JCI Training Commission Chairperson

By Lewis, 2012年2月14日

Dear Trainers,

We are only a few days over a month in 2012 and JCI Training made tremendous progress already in achieving our goals in 2012.

After the JCI Executive Committee authorized and requested that the JCI Training Commission implement and test a fair but effective evaluation system, we also received the task to prepare a series of short and easy to conduct courses that could help in the activation and development of the Local Organizations.

Last year a series of decisions were made in order to improve the quality of training, after many complaints were received from organizations who invested money to bring in trainers who did not perform as expected for a JCI Certified Trainer. A deep study was made about the reason of the decline of the quality and among other factors, it was detected that the two courses that develop the trainer in JCI had two major problems:

  1. The content of the courses was more than 3 years old and the teaching process was not oriented to develop and evaluate progress of the participants, leaving the responsibility of learning to the participant, which is fine according to the adult learning theories but it was not working and more and more trainers came out of these courses without knowing the content and without real opportunities to practice training skills during the course.
  2. The certification of trainers for these 2 courses was not accurate enough to ensure quality because many of the current Assistant or Head Trainers actually came from the transition rule to certify Prime and Excel trainers as JCI Trainer and JCI Designer trainers as if those courses were the same. The courses are not even similar and this created a gap between the knowledge of the trainers and the expectations of JCI Training and the participants.

The first problem is being solved at this moment. JCI Trainer and JCI Designer had a first test of a new version at the 2011 JCI World Congress in Brussels and the result was that the changes had to be much deeper. So, all trainers conducting JCI Trainer after November 2011 receive a totally new version and the feedback from those courses is helping the design of the New JCI Trainer course to be launched at the 2012 JCI Conferences.

But we still have no idea how these courses are being conducted, so we also need an evaluation system and since November 13, 2011 all Trainers and participants of JCI Official Courses receive an e-mail with an evaluation form to be returned via e-mail. This evaluates the trainers and the course from the participants’ prospective but we are still not sure if the current Assistant and Head Trainers of JCI Trainer and JCI Designer have the knowledge, ability and skills to conduct those courses. Because it would not be fair to stop all current trainers from conducting these courses while all can be evaluated, the JCI Training Commission decided the following at the January 29, 2012 meeting:

Cancel all applications for Head Trainer or Assistant Trainer of JCI Trainer and JCI Designer until May 31, 2012. This will allow the Commission to detect and evaluate the trainers who have the skills and knowledge to conduct the new courses.

Because the content of the modules changed 100 percent in some cases and the modules also changed names and order, it will be hard to detect who conducted what for Head Trainer applications. Some trainers conducted one module in 2009 and that module already changed at least 3 times and today the content is totally different so it cannot be accepted as Recommended as to become Head Trainer.

The JCI Training Commission does not have the solution yet on how to re-train and evaluate all current Assistant and Head Trainers of JCI Trainer and JCI Designer. A few Head Trainers who have been conducting the new version may be evaluated and trained to conduct the first courses of the new versions, if they show and demonstrate that they have the skills and knowledge. Other Head Trainers will have to be trained again to understand the content and the learning process of the new courses. Assistant Trainers may have to conduct some modules again.

The JCI Training Commission would like to hear your opinion and suggestions on how to:

  1. Train the current Head Trainers of JCI Trainer and JCI Designer and ensure that only the ones who have total knowledge of the content and the skills to deliver it be re-certified
  2. Have a fair transition for Assistant trainers to be evaluated and trained to continue conducting the new courses as Assistant Trainers.

We are looking for intelligent and creative solutions that will benefit the standards and increase the quality of training in JCI. JCI Training made many suggestions to change the Policy Manual and increase the level of trainers who can apply and become Assistant and Head Trainers of JCI Trainer and JCI Designer. The proposals were not accepted with the argument that some National Organizations don’t have enough NGs, IGs and ITFs so the level to be Head Trainer conduct a JCI Trainer course should stay as CNT.

Looking forward to your suggestions and ideas we will continue collaborate and to work hard to make sure that JCI Training will maintain the necessary level of quality in order for JCI Trainers to contribute to our Organization’s mission.

JCI Training Takes Exciting Steps in 2012

By Lewis, 2012年1月31日

First of all: a very happy and successful new year to all of you! 2012 is going to be an important year for JCI Training. This was already clear in the first big event this year, the January Board Meeting at JCI World Headquarters in St. Louis, USA. During this meeting, the JCI Board established the strategies and goals that must be taken by all parts of the organization to fulfill the 2012 JCI Plan of Action for JCI Training. During the Executive Committee meeting, the Training Commission was asked to design a new, more relevant and more realistic JCI Training Policy Manual.

JCI Secretary Edson A. Kodama used a very good metaphor: JCI Training Institute (as it was called then) was built in the 1990’s. He said it’s like building a house for your family. Maybe you think you will have one or two children. But then when you suddenly have ten children, the house doesn’t fit anymore. You can change and amend all you want, but the house is not suitable for the current situation and everybody starts feeling the problem. We need to build a new house for JCI Training. The Training Commission has taken this assignment with pride and will work hard in the upcoming months hard to produce a first draft. At all four JCI Area Conferences, we will take the opportunity to communicate with trainers, national presidents, officers and members to make sure we take all ideas into account. The goal is to have a new Training Policy Manual we can work with for the next decades at this year’s JCI World Congress in Taipei, Taiwan.

Secondly, improving the quality of training and trainers in order to achieve the JCI Mission is one of our main objectives this year. Therefore we need more input on how our JCI Trainers work and deliver the courses so we know how we can support and help them improve their knowledge and skills. We will start shortly with testing an online evaluation system at the JCI official courses. As soon as we have more specific information about this, you will hear more from the Training Commission.

Warm regards on behalf of all Training Commissioners.
